Major Injuries After a Head-On Collision

It was evening, and Dave and Margaret* were heading home, traveling southbound on US-31. As they approached an intersection, another driver suddenly turned directly in front of the couple, resulting in a head-on collision.

The crash was so violent that Dave and Margaret’s vehicle flipped on its side and was knocked off the road. If it hadn’t struck a utility pole, it would have tumbled all the way down a ravine.

While the outcome could have been far worse, both Dave and Margaret were left with serious, lasting injuries.

Dave suffered a severely broken leg, snapping his tibia and fibula just above the ankle. The doctors performed an ORIF (open reduction and internal fixation), a surgery where they pinned and screwed his shattered bones back together. He also cracked his sternum when the airbag hit his chest.

Margaret had significant cuts and broken fragments of bone under her eye and along the left side of her face; doctors had to insert three plates in her head to repair the damage. She also needed 18 stitches in her hand to close severe wounds.
