You served your country with dedication. Now you are suffering from a disabling injury, disease, or condition caused or made worse by your military service. The VA owes you benefits. Getting them is a different matter.
Attorney Karl Truman is not just a veterans disability lawyer. He is a veteran. He served 28 years in the U.S. Army Reserve, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel in 2009. He is VA-accredited, a formal designation granted only to attorneys who have completed veterans law training. He wrote the book on VA claims, literally. His free guide, ‘Fight the VA & Win,’ is available to every veteran we represent.
Karl Truman enlisted in 1981, was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in 1983, and retired as a Lieutenant Colonel in 2009 after 28 years of military service. He balanced his legal career and military service simultaneously for more than 20 years, serving in roles including Training Operations Officer with Task Force 100 in direct support of Operation Desert Storm. He earned the Meritorious Service Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster and the Army Commendation Medal, among other decorations.
Karl is VA-accredited, a formal designation granted only to attorneys who have completed veterans law training. He is also a member of NOVA, the National Organization of Veterans Advocates. His veterans disability claims coordinator is also a U.S. Army veteran. This is not a firm that learned veterans law from a textbook. It is a firm run by someone who lived it.
No fees unless we win. Available 24/7. Karl Truman is a VA-accredited attorney. As a veteran himself, he takes these cases personally.
To qualify for VA disability benefits, you must be a veteran who was injured or suffered a disease in the line of duty during military service in a branch of the U.S. Armed Forces. Veterans with bad conduct, other than honorable, or dishonorable discharges may not be eligible.
The VA classifies benefits into four categories. Disability Compensation is a tax-free monthly benefit based on a disability rating from 10 to 100 percent. Special Monthly Compensation (SMC) covers additional costs for conditions like paralysis or limb loss. Claims Based on Special Circumstances cover other service-related costs including vehicle modification allowances. Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (DIC) is available to qualifying family members of veterans who died from a service-connected condition.
Some qualifying conditions are time-limited by how soon after discharge they appear. The sooner you file, the better your position. Do not wait.
Karl Truman holds the formal VA accreditation designation, earned through veterans law training. Most attorneys who say they handle VA claims have not completed this process. Karl has.
Karl served 28 years in the Army Reserve, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel. He understands military culture, service-connected conditions, and the VA system from the inside.
We evaluate all four categories of VA benefits for every veteran we represent: Disability Compensation, SMC, Special Claims, and DIC. Many veterans are entitled to more than they know.
From the moment you call, we take over the legal fight. You focus on recovery. We handle everything else.
We move immediately to build the strongest possible case: gathering records, securing evidence, consulting experts, and documenting every aspect of your situation before anything is lost or altered.
From insurance claims to medical records, legal filings, and demand letters, we manage every detail so you can focus on healing. You will never be left wondering what is happening with your case.
The party on the other side of your claim has professionals working to minimize what they pay you. We deal with them directly and protect you from every tactic designed to undervalue your claim.
While most cases settle, we prepare every case for trial. The other side knows we will not back down, and that gives us the leverage to secure maximum compensation.

What conditions qualify for VA disability benefits?
A wide range of physical and mental health conditions qualify if they are service-connected or aggravated by service. Common qualifying conditions include heart disease, hypertension, diabetes, hearing loss, chronic back pain, PTSD, depression, anxiety, traumatic brain injury, migraines, GERD, arthritis, Persian Gulf illnesses, and hazardous material exposure conditions. This is not an exhaustive list. Contact us for an evaluation of your specific situation.
What does a VA disability rating mean and how is it determined?
The VA rates the severity of each service-connected condition on a scale from 10 to 100 percent, in increments of 10. Your monthly disability compensation payment is calculated based on this rating. When a veteran has multiple conditions, the VA uses a combined ratings formula rather than simple addition. This formula often produces a lower combined rating than veterans expect.
What are the four types of VA disability benefits?
Disability Compensation is a tax-free monthly payment for service-connected conditions. Special Monthly Compensation provides additional tax-free benefits for conditions requiring attendant care or involving limb loss. Claims Based on Special Circumstances cover costs like vehicle modifications and clothing damaged by prosthetics. Dependency and Indemnity Compensation provides tax-free benefits to eligible surviving family members of veterans who died from service-connected conditions.
What if the VA denied my claim or gave me a lower rating than I deserve?
You have the right to appeal. You can request a Higher-Level Review of the original decision, or file a Supplemental Claim if you have new and relevant evidence. If those fail, you can appeal to the Board of Veterans Appeals. We handle every level of this process and do not accept unfair ratings quietly.
Do I need a VA-accredited attorney to file a VA claim?
You do not need an attorney for an initial claim, but having one significantly improves your chances of getting a fair rating the first time and avoids costly denials and delays. Karl Truman is formally VA-accredited, meaning he has completed the specific training required to represent veterans before the VA.
How much does a VA disability attorney cost?
VA disability fees are regulated by federal law. Attorneys may only charge fees on benefits recovered through successful appeals, not on initial claims. We will explain the specific fee arrangement before we begin working on your case.
