About Karl Truman (The Colonel)
“As long as I can remember, the two careers I wanted to pursue were being a lawyer or an officer in the United States Army. I am grateful I have had an opportunity to do both.”
Most people pick one. Karl Truman ran both at once for 22 years.
He enlisted in 1981. He took his commission through Army ROTC at the University of Kentucky in 1983 and went in as an Armor officer. He earned his Juris Doctor from the University of Louisville in 1987. He opened the Karl Truman Law Office in 1991. He retired from the Army in 2009 as a Lieutenant Colonel, 28 years in.
For 22 of those years he was building a law practice and wearing the uniform at the same time. Airborne School at Fort Benning. The Air Assault Course at Fort Campbell. Armor Officer Basic and Advanced at Fort Knox. Anti-terrorism instructor training with the J.F.K. Center for Special Warfare at Fort Bragg. And a growing caseload of injured people in Louisville and Jeffersonville who needed somebody willing to go to war with an insurance company.
Thirty-five years of law. Twenty-eight years of Army. The two never competed. They compounded.
Karl is certified as a Civil Trial Specialist by the National Board of Trial Advocacy and holds their certification in Pre-Trial Procedure. He carries a diploma from the National Institute of Trial Advocacy. He is accredited to represent veterans before the Department of Veterans Affairs. He is licensed in Kentucky and Indiana and admitted in four federal district courts across both states.
He takes the cases where the stakes are highest and the opposition is toughest. Commercial trucks. Semi-trailers. Catastrophic injury. Wrongful death.
He does not believe in shortcuts or gimmicks. He believes in preparation, and in telling you the truth about your case on day one even when the truth is not what you wanted. When an insurance company lowballs a settlement or denies a legitimate claim, they find out fast that Karl Truman does not intimidate, and that he will try the case if that is what it takes.
Count on the Colonel.
Military Service & Leadership
Karl enlisted in 1981 and took his commission through Army ROTC at the University of Kentucky in 1983, going in as an Armor officer. He retired in 2009 as a Lieutenant Colonel after 28 years of service.
For 22 of those years he ran a law practice and wore the uniform at the same time. The training stacked up alongside the caseload: Armor Officer Basic and Advanced at Fort Knox, the Air Assault Course at Fort Campbell, Airborne School at Fort Benning, Nuclear Biological and Chemical Defense Operations, and anti-terrorism instructor training with the J.F.K. Center for Special Warfare at Fort Bragg.
He is accredited to represent veterans before the Department of Veterans Affairs. For the veterans who walk into this office, that is not a line on a website. It is somebody who has been through the same system they are fighting.
His military training instilled values that guide every aspect of his legal practice:
- Discipline: Meticulous case preparation and attention to detail that leaves nothing to chance
- Integrity: Honest communication and transparent advice, even when it’s difficult
- Strategic Thinking: Developing comprehensive legal strategies that account for every contingency
- Courage: Standing up to powerful insurance companies and corporate defendants without hesitation
- Service Above Self: Putting client needs first and fighting for outcomes that truly change lives
These aren’t just words on a website; they’re the core values by which Karl Truman lives and practices law every single day.
